Dr. Nir Melamed is a clinician-scientist in Sunnybrook’s DAN Women & Babies Program who leads research on twin pregnancies and is the Head of the Twins Clinic at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. With over 200 peer-reviewed research publications, review papers, editorials, and book chapters, Dr. Melamed’s main research interests include twin pregnancies, fetal growth, and preterm birth. He has conducted and published a large number of studies on different aspects of twin pregnancies including the:

  • Prediction and prevention of preterm birth
  • Assessment of growth of twin fetuses and the mechanisms underlying fetal growth restriction in twin gestations
  • Mechanisms underlying preeclampsia in twin gestations
  • Impact of diabetes on twin fetuses
  • Impact of obesity and optimal maternal weight gain during pregnancy in twins
  • Optimal mode of delivery and labor and delivery complications in twin gestations

Dr. Melamed completed his training in OBGYN in Israel and came to Toronto in 2012 for a two-year fellowship program in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Toronto. In 2014, he joined Sunnybrook as a clinician scientist and a full-time staff physician in the Division of Maternal-Fetal-Medicine. Dr. Melamed is a Professor at the University of Toronto, a Senior Scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute, and the Program Research Director at the Women & Babies Program. Dr. Melamed holds the Waugh Family Chair in Twins Research.
